The Foundation Programme for Admission to Associate Membership of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration and Mediation
Course Overview
The CIAM Associate Programme (CIAM-AP) is the entry-level qualifying programme of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration and Mediation. It provides the intellectual and professional foundation on which a career in dispute resolution is built, covering the theory of arbitration, the philosophy of mediation, the ethics of neutrality, and the craft of communication.
It is designed for graduates and undergraduates from any discipline who wish to build a credible, ethically grounded foundation in arbitration and mediation practice. Successful completion leads to admission as an Associate (ACIAM), the first formal membership grade of the Institute and the gateway to the Full Member (MCIAM) programme.
The programme is rigorous, practical, and Nigerian in its orientation while meeting international standards. Its cases include landmark decisions of the Nigerian courts, and its exercises reflect disputes that actually arise in Nigeria’s commercial, construction, energy, and family contexts.
Requirements
To be eligible for the Associate Programme, an applicant must hold a university degree from a recognised institution or be an undergraduate student in any university accredited or approved by the National Universities Commission.
There is no requirement that the applicant’s degree be in law. The Institute is open to professionals from all disciplines — commerce, engineering, construction, healthcare, finance, and beyond, because disputes arise in every sector.
English language competence: CIAM training and assessment is conducted in English, so proficiency in written and spoken English is essential.
Learning Outcome
On successful completion of this programme, candidates will be able to:
- Explain the concept, origins, evolution, and legal framework of alternative dispute resolution (ADR) in Nigeria.
- Identify and distinguish between the main forms of ADR and evaluate their advantages and limitations for different disputes.
- Explain the essential elements of a valid arbitration agreement and the procedure for commencing and conducting an arbitration.
- Describe the powers and duties of an arbitral tribunal, the types of arbitral awards, and the grounds for challenging or setting aside an award in Nigeria.
- Explain the mediation process and the mediator’s role, and apply basic mediation communication skills — active listening, reframing, and questioning.
- Apply principled negotiation techniques and manage conflict dynamics, emotional escalation, and cross-cultural communication.
- Identify and apply the core ethical principles and the CIAM Code and Oath of Professional Conduct governing ADR practitioners.
